This isn't really about food

I haven't updated in awhile and since this is (technically) a foodporn blog, here's an obligatory picture of what I consider to be the perfect bagel:

Everything bagel, avocado, onion chive cream cheese, red onions, capers, lox and tomatoes.

Breakfast for Dessert!

As you may know, I lovelovelove yogurt. Especially the tarty taste of Greek/Turkish yogurt. Iceland has its own little national yogurt called "Skyr" and from what I can gather it's pronounced like "skeeer" with a retroflex r. This might be completely wrong because I managed to not pick up any Icelandic aside from thanks (takk), hello (hai) and what to say during a toast (skol!). But anyways, back to the yogurt...

Skyr is something like a national pasttime in Iceland. It's EVERYWHERE. In gas stations, corner stores, coffee shops and restauarants in some variation. The fancier versions, seen above, are more like a Skyr mousse. So very very light and creamy and then have some sort of berry reduction or compote going on on the side.

The weirdest thing about desserts with Skyr is that it retains all its properties (mostly) of being low-fat and healthy but it tastes DELICIOUS and it's DESSERT. It seems like it's quite possible to have an entire Skyr meal- the plain yogurt, the berry shake and the mousse dessert.

So this post is dedicated to some of my favorite food here in iceland, the seafood. I must be honest and let you know that we didnt just wander into these places right off the street. Both of these places are from the book, Wallpaper City Guide Reykjavik.

The fist was Sægreifinn. It is known for its lobster soup which is slightly sweet from the atlantic lobster pulled right out of the bay and a little spicy. It is served with a big bowl of flaky bread and icelandic butter. Delicious.

Do you like Seafood?!?!

So I know that Bourdain and Three Sheetskind of gave Iceland a bad rap on their food BUT it seems as long as you're not celebrating Þorrablót , it's pretty damn good. The lamb is some of the best I've ever had (aside from in Turkey, but it's cooked and spiced differently so it nearly doesn't count) and the lobster and cod is so fresh, you basically watch them pull it out of the sea and onto your plate.

Our first night, Dan and I went to a restaurant that specializes in Icelandic fusion. We got the lobster appetizers, I had the lamb and Dan had the fish of the day, plaice. For dessert, we had a skyr mousse and OMGSOGOOD. Anyways, more pictures are forthcoming.

Butter of the gods

I have been obsessing over it ever since anthony bourdain chose it to be his last meal and then continued to eat it over and over again on no reservations. My first encounter with bone marrow was within thick pieces of oxtail(we'll get back to this one later). I sucked it out like vampire and felt like i was robbed. I needed MORE.

If you ever want a certain food either google the food and your city or search it in yelp. I found that legit bone marrow was available at stella sola in the heights of houston tx. BOOM:

The tiny spoon is deceiving but cereal, this shit is fo realz y'all. Alright, so anthony bourdain also described bone marrow as a meat butter. This is pretty accurate if you smear it on bread. If you don't, then it has a slight texture to it. Also, even if you contain yourself and manage to not get any outside yo mouff, your lips and surrounding areas will still be glistening. We were not meant to eat such foods. Butter of the gods

Iceland!

Dan and I landed hours ago, I'm sure of it. Except, all of our clocks are still on Philly time so I'm not really sure what time it is now. We took naps because we were both up until 4am on Thursday packing before and, uh, I dunno just exhausted. The ride got a little bumpy in the middle of it but otherwise uneventful. Oh yeah, except for the person who needed emergency medical assistance mid-flight but I guess everything turned out OK since there was no emergency landing. Thoughts while I'm all weird and jet-lagged:

-we left mounds and mounds of snow for Iceland and there's, like, almost no snow here at all and they're right about it not being that cold- it's probably right on par with New York temps right now
-it's true that there are no atheists in foxholes, or agnostics on planes, since every time we hit a bump i immediately start making my peace with god
-the Icelandair terminal at JFK probably has to be in one of the worst international terminals i've ever been in. only a mcdonald's and a duty-free store, are you serious?
-TONIGHT IS PRIME-TIME FOR NORTHERN LIGHTS VIEWING.

pictures will be forthcoming. carry on.

Inaugural post!

So if you've been invited to this blog, it's basically a place for us to post food pictures and descriptions. I got the idea from the Crouse girls' blog "http://sowhatihaveagut.blogspot.com/" and Jess's fwts.net. Anyways, I'm sure we'll be taking pics of food in Iceland this week :)
